Background of the Study
The nursing profession, particularly in the field of cardiac care, is demanding and can lead to high levels of stress. Cardiac nurses often work in high-pressure environments, dealing with life-threatening conditions such as heart attacks, arrhythmias, and heart failure, while also managing the emotional needs of patients and their families (Olowoyeye et al., 2023). This stress, if not properly managed, can lead to burnout, emotional exhaustion, and a decline in the quality of care provided to patients (Ahmed & Salau, 2024). Stress levels among nurses are directly correlated with job satisfaction, patient outcomes, and overall quality of care in healthcare settings (Adegboyega et al., 2023).
In Kano State, one of Nigeria's largest cities, the healthcare system faces challenges, including overcrowding, limited resources, and an increasing burden of cardiovascular diseases (Sani et al., 2023). These factors contribute to the stress experienced by cardiac nurses, which may negatively affect their performance and the quality of care provided to patients. Nurses in cardiac care units are responsible for complex patient care, including monitoring heart conditions, administering treatments, and providing patient education, all of which can be overwhelming under stressful conditions (Ezekiel et al., 2024). Understanding the relationship between nurse stress and care quality is crucial for improving the work environment and patient outcomes in cardiac care settings.
Despite the recognition of stress as a significant factor in healthcare quality, limited research exists on the specific impact of stress levels among cardiac nurses on their ability to provide quality care in Nigeria. This study aims to examine how the stress levels of cardiac nurses in Kano State influence their performance and the quality of care they deliver to patients.
Statement of the Problem
Cardiac nurses in Kano State face high levels of stress due to the demanding nature of their work, which may affect their ability to deliver quality care to patients. Stress among healthcare professionals has been linked to poor job satisfaction, burnout, and decreased patient care quality (Oluwadamilola et al., 2023). However, there is insufficient evidence on how stress specifically impacts the quality of care provided by cardiac nurses in Nigeria. This study aims to assess the effect of nurse stress levels on their ability to provide quality cardiac care, thereby identifying areas for improvement in nurse well-being and patient outcomes.
Objectives of the Study
Research Questions
Research Hypotheses
Scope and Limitations of the Study This study will focus on cardiac nurses in Kano State and evaluate the impact of their stress levels on the quality of care they provide. The study is limited to one region and may not be applicable to nurses in other regions of Nigeria. Limitations may include self-reported data on stress levels and the subjective nature of measuring care quality, as well as the influence of other factors such as hospital resources and organizational support.
